We got home and I got ready for my first appointment. My calendar said Oscar T. - 8am. He is going to be calling me from Hamburg, Germany.
I spend 15 minutes preparing for the meeting by reviewing his material and praying for our time. This was going to be my first call with Oscar. He is El Salvadorian and has been a missionary for 15 years in various places around the world. Prior to being a missionary he was in marketing. He has raised funds for the missionary work. His resume' was impressive to say the least.
Here I am, the "fundraising expert." I am supposed to coach this guy.
We dive into the call and become acquainted. After the introductions and a few preliminary questions, I tell Oscar, "We are always going to pray during our calls. Let me pray now for the rest of our time together. I'm going to ask the Lord to speak, not me."
30 minutes later I've given my talk on Fundraising as Ministry. Here are a few of Oscar's comments:
- "Your words have life. Although I haven't met you, you are blessing me with your wisdom and passion."
- "This truth is echoing in my heart, you can't see me, but I am so grateful."
- "This has been a Holy time. Thank you Jeff."
Why me?, I think. Surely, God is Love.
